The Lancet Microbe: Auxergen’s Report on the 2024 Mpox Outbreak
Baltimore, Maryland – November 5, 2024
Auxergen’s latest research on the rapidly evolving mpox strains has been published in The Lancet Microbe. With a ranking of 2nd out of 132 in the infectious disease category, and 3rd out of 161 in the microbiology category, it is one of the world’s foremost scientific journals.
Key Findings:
- The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the 2024 mpox virus (MPXV) clade Ib outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern.
- Auxergen’s scientific team analyzed 32 MPXV Ib sequences and discovered that the current outbreak is recombining much more quickly than the 2022 outbreak.
- The research suggests that continued transmission and evolution of MPVX Ib may lead to more pathogenic strains.

Why It Matters:
- The recombination of MPXV Ib has likely resulted in the highly concerning resurgence of mpox seen in the current outbreak.
- Superinfection, infection of multiple viral strains in a single individual, likely caused recombination to occur.
- Continued surveillance and public health policy interventions are necessary to reduce the worldwide impact of MPXV.
